Specim: From invisible to visible with hyperspectral systems

Specim, Spectral Imaging Ltd. is manufacturer of hyperspectral imaging instruments and systems. Customers come from demanding industrial and science applications like color measurement, recycling, geological core logging, process analytical technology (PAT), life sciences, chemical imaging, and forensics.

The Oulu-based Specim was founded in 1995 by three former researchers of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. All operations and R&D are located in Oulu.

The imaging spectrographs and spectral camera products the company provides are widely used in various industrial, environmental and defense applications. The equipment is used for instance in mining industry to create mineral maps from core scanning, for defining plant diseases, monitoring the condition of pipes from airplanes or drones, quality control in the industry, tracking drug plantations, and detecting explosives.

"Many applications which have originally been developed for instance for space or defense administration, have in time begun to serve more our everyday life. We trust that this is the case also for hyperspectral imaging. We want to be early movers in these new markets thanks to our R&D investment," says Timo Hyvärinen, one of the original founders and a majority owner of the company.

In 2015, Specim received 5.3 MEUR growth financing from capital investor Teknoventure Oy and Tekes. Specim will focus the financing into developing a new product generation as well as enforcing and expanding its global market position.

With Tekes funding the company has been able to take a great leap in product and worklife innovation development over the years.
