Mobility as a Service

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) - joint programme

Finland is developing an open innovation platform for mobility services first in the world. This work is supported by the joint program of Tekes and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Tekes launches a market discourse for developing and piloting door-to-door mobility services. Door-to-door mobility services refer to services, where users can see, book, pay, and follow the realization of the travel chain. Pilots included in the joint program aim to understand and meet the needs of certain user groups and to generate door-to-door services fitting to these user profiles.

The door-to-door mobility services will be offered to users by ‘mobility operators’. Seamless and smooth mobility services need the help of modern digital solutions to be realized. These digital solutions, in turn, require open access to the timetables, real-time location information, and payment systems of existing transport service providers (e.g., railway operators, taxis, local transport operators, car sharing).

It is especially relevant that the pilot projects demonstrate mobility solutions that integrate intercity transportation, local transportation, as well as last mile solutions.

“Let us merge underground, bus, train, tram, taxi, ride sharing, and city bike services into one application in a smart phone. Then let companies compete on who provides the total service to users fastest or cheapest.” – Transport engineer Sonja Heikkilä, Helsingin Sanomat 7.10.2014.
