Operational Strategic Centres

In June 2006, the Science and Technology Policy Council of Finland made a decision on the policies and start-up measures connected to the operations of Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation.

The following Strategic Centres are in operation

Forest cluster: Forestcluster Ltd

The Strategic Centre for the forest sector intends to become the strongest innovation environment of the branch globally. The aim of Forestcluster Ltd is to increase and intensify the cooperation between companies, universities and research institutes in the area of high-quality and innovative research enhancing the renewal of the forest industry sector. Forestcluster Ltd manages research programmes that address specific issues and research questions defined in the Research Strategy of the Finnish Forest Cluster.

Metal products and mechanical engineering: FIMECC Oy

The Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster (FIMECC) approach is based on customer-oriented, applicationdriven research, open dynamic international
cooperation and co-creation, worldclass scientific results, and globally leading competences in selected focus areas. FIMECC aims to double the R&D investment and output of the metals and engineering industries. FIMECC's strategic research themes are: service business, user experience, global networks, intelligent solutions and breakthrough materials.

Built environment innovations: RYM Ltd 

The aim is that the built environment in Finland should be one of the best in the world for people, the economy and society. Development of the built environment should be user- and customer-oriented, facilitating improvement of people's health and well-being. It should also create good conditions for competition and respond to the changing needs of industry, business, habitation and consumption in the best possible way. Energy-efficiency, operating models and processes, competitive infrastructure and user-oriented spaces are the thematic fields of research within the Centre for built environment innovations.

Information and communication industry and services: Tieto- ja viestintäteollisuuden tutkimus TIVIT Oy

TIVIT Ltd is the Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation in the field of ICT. Its main task is to manage selected, globally leading national and international research programmes in the sector. TIVIT was established in cooperation with leading Finnish companies and universities with the aim of generating new growth based on know-how, knowledge and innovation by accelerating the utilization of the latest research results in global business.

Energy and the environment: CLEEN Ltd

CLEEN Ltd's operation as the Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation in the energy and environment sector is based on the common vision and strategic research agenda defined by the Strategic Centre's owners, i.e. companies and research institutes. CLEEN Ltd is an essential means to leverage the Finnish competitiveness to top international level in global energy and environmental markets through common, long-term and networked strategic research and development.

Health and well-being: SalWe Ltd

The goal of the Strategic Centre for Health and Well-being is to improve the health and well-being of the individual and to boost business operations in the health sector in Finland. The Strategic Centre's practical work centres on development of products, services and practices to prevent and treat diseases with major public health and economic impact. The diseases and conditions selected for Centre focus are obesity and related conditions, neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, cancers, and microbial infections and inflammation. The Strategic Centre focuses on areas where Finland possesses world class expertise. These are areas where Finnish companies have the potential to become internationally successful.
