Companies investing in R&D
Total expenditure on research and development rose in Finland to EUR 6.9 billion in 2008. R&D expenditure in the business sector amounted to EUR 5.1 billion. Over EUR 2.5 billion of this was spent on electronics and electrical products.

Finland is home to Nokia, the European Union's top investor in research and development. Other large companies investing heavily in innovation in Finland include, amongst others, Metso, Ericsson, ABB, Wärtsilä, Orion, Stora Enso, TietoEnator, Amer Sport, Kemira, Kone, Patria Industries, Tellabs, UPM-Kymmene, Metsäliitto, Cargotec, Elektrobit, Ahlstrom, Schering, Rautaruukki, Vaisala, F-Secure and Honeywell.
R&D in small companies
Every year, Tekes finances some 1,500 business research and development projects. In total, 50 - 60 percent of funding for companies is directed at small businesses with ambitious R&D aspirations.
Tekes programmes have proven an effective form of cooperation and networking for both small and large businesses, universities and research institutes wishing to develop innovative products, processes and services.
